Multi-faceted Divina, 2017

The subject, Divina, is an individual whose existence has been compartmentalized, categorized, characterized and classified... and placed in boxes. All of this due to the fact that she is a woman, black and beautifully intelligent and free. In this large silverpoint drawing, Divina flips the restrictions that are placed on her soul by other people's confining script her life to a script of being an unapologetically 'Multi-Faceted' Black Female illuminating beyond the boxes that were set to brand and confine. The silver medium on the black surface celebrates the natural beauty of her dark skin, emphasizes the texture of her 'locs' and accentuates her stylish clothes.
